Celebrating the exceptional and enduring qualities of natural fabrics

Leaf & Loom was founded with a simple purpose: to bring hemp fabric back into everyday interiors and to show what hemp can be — refined, enduring, and profoundly sustainable. We are a small company with a big ambition: to champion sustainable natural fibre fabrics generally, and hemp in particular, which we feel has been unfairly overlooked and undervalued. Every hemp fabric we offer is chosen for its natural beauty, honest origins, and lasting quality.

Our mission is to show that hemp is much more than people imagine: not coarse or crude, but refined, versatile and beautiful. It is a fibre of remarkable strength, subtlety and character — every bit the equal of linen, and arguably more sustainable. Through our collection of thoughtfully made hemp fabrics for interiors, we aim to reconnect people with this extraordinary plant — its history, integrity, versatility and enduring quality — and to champion its potential to help shape a more responsible future for interiors and beyond.

A new look at an ancient weave

For centuries, hemp was one of Britain’s most valued crops — grown across the country and woven into cloth, rope, and sails. In Somerset, near where we live, fields of hemp once shaped both the land and the livelihoods of those who worked it. Then, slowly, it was forgotten — replaced by fibres that were easier to industrialise but far harder on the planet.

Hemp’s story is not only historical — it is personal.

Our founder, Camilla, has spent over twenty years working alongside hemp textiles, developing a close familiarity with the fibre and the industry that surrounds it. Through years of sourcing and selling hemp fabrics, she has seen how often the material is misunderstood — dismissed as rustic, when in reality it is refined, versatile and enduring. Leaf & Loom was created to change that perception: a desire to present hemp at its best, to curate fabrics with care, and to help restore appreciation for a fibre with extraordinary potential for contemporary interiors.

It feels that we are at an important turning point. We can sense a genuine shift — a growing energy around hemp once again. Across the UK and Europe, interest in cultivating and working with hemp textiles is returning, and we are proud to be part of that renewal: to see hemp woven back into everyday interiors, valued for its strength, beauty and respect for the earth.

Where our hemp comes from

We work with mills in Europe and China, regions with long and continuous traditions of hemp cultivation and textile production. Hemp is a crop deeply rooted in these landscapes — grown by small farming communities and processed using expertise passed down through generations.

Our European hemp fabrics are produced from fibre grown primarily in France, the Netherlands and Germany, then spun and woven in Eastern Europe, where natural fibre weaving remains an important part of local industry. These mills specialise in mechanical processing and low-impact finishing, preserving the natural strength and character of the fibre.

Our Chinese hemp fabrics come from regions where hemp has been cultivated for thousands of years. China remains one of the world’s leading centres of hemp textile knowledge. We work with experienced mills that manage the supply chain from plant to finished cloth, ensuring consistency, traceability and responsible production.

Every partner we work with is selected for their environmental standards, technical skill and respect for the material. While certification varies by mill and fabric, we prioritise low-input farming, responsible dyeing and finishing, and long-term working relationships built on trust and transparency.

Specific details for each hemp fabric — including origin, processing and certifications — are listed on the individual fabric pages.
